When You Need More Helvetica
This—Helvetica Perfume—shouldn’t surprise me that Helvetica could become a perfume when we see it in every other facet of our lives. This is almost as good as when I generated a promotional piece from a client that requested I use the typeface, “Hel-teef-a.” This is one gag gift item that I had to share as…
Type is Universal
It’s no secret that I am a bit of a type geek, as well as a lover of documentaries. Whenever the two collide, I’m dancing on the inside (or outside… or both). The OffBook series continues to be an invaluable resource. Their video library is full of little digestible clips of design related topics and…
Web Design: Trends vs. Progress
Web design is swiftly changing, especially when you consider just how young the internet is. In it’s infancy, websites were purely sources of content, and high-tech styling consisted of table layouts and maybe, just maybe, colored (or blinking) text. As usage has continued to explode, the technology to make content readable, accessible, and even enjoyable…
Getting Older Bank of America-Style
When I came across this slider graphic for Bank of America, I had to post it and make a comment. If this graphic were true, then when we age, our faces get more dirty? I realize that aging someone effectively is difficult for even Hollywood, but these Photoshop efforts are almost giggle-worthy. I think we…
Logo Inspiration
I’m always digging to see what other designers are crafting and am amazed that we’re still finding ways to create clean, creative logos and branding systems in just a few marks. When I’ve spent way too many hours staring at a computer screen, looking for inspiration and following trends, I pop open an old fashioned…
Logos with Personality
PBS Off Book created a mini documentary on logo design, and although it’s impossible to capture the essence of the history, purpose, style, and process of creating logos in six minutes, it’s fun to at least get a glimpse. My top take-away: Design with the brand’s personality in mind. This “mask” will represent your brand…
Friday Fun: A Funny Depiction of What Happens Too Often in the Design Process
This cartoon says it all… and it is very funny. How a Web Design Goes Straight to Hell For those of us involved in design, web development, writing, videos and anything that’s not straight-up accounting, we’ve all had this experience. A client hires you for your expertise and then… well, you know. Check this scenario…
Spec Work Debate Update
UPDATE: Interesting… An RFP for the National Endowment for the Arts recently required spec work, so the leading graphic designer’s association responded in a well-written letter. The irony is quite strong here… that an arts organization would be requiring free work (and damaging an industry they are supposed to protect)!
